Hon. Syed Naveed Qamar belongs to a renowned and strong political family of Sindh Province of Pakistan. His grandfather, Syed Miran Muhammad Shah served as the first Speaker of the Provisional Assembly of Sindh, after Sindh’s accession to Pakistan in 1947. Later, his grandfather joined Foreign Service and picked up the diplomatic assignment as 1st Ambassador of Pakistan to Spain. His father, Syed Qamar-uz-Zaman Shah actively took participation in politics and was also a Deputy Speaker of Sindh Assembly, and Senator during Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto’s rule.
Hon. Syed Naveed Qamar completed his B.Sc (Hons) in 1976 from Manchester University, UK followed by an MS in Management from Northrop University, USA in 1978 and MBA from California State University, USA in 1979.
POLTICAL CAREER AND PARLIAMENTARY RESPOSIBILITIES
Hon. Syed Naveed Qamar started his Political Career after contesting General Elections in 1988 and was elected as a Member of Provisional Assembly Sindh, where he held the government portfolio as Provincial Minister for Information, Government of Sindh till 1990. In General Elections in 1990, He elected as Member National Assembly of Pakistan.
He successfully defended his constituency during the 1993 general elections with high margins, and won the slot in the government of Prime Minister Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto as Chairman, Privatization Commission.
In general elections 2002 and 2007, he again secured his seat as an elected Member of the National Assembly of Pakistan. He has served as Defense Minister of Pakistan during 2012-2013. He has also served as Federal Minister for Privatization, Federal Minister for Finance, Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources and Federal minister for Defense.
He took oath for his current office on June 01, 2013 after being elected sixth time from NA-222 (Tando Muhammad Khan-cum-Hyderabad-cum-Badin) constituency, in the general elections of 2013.
Currently, he is serving as Chairman, Standing Committee on Railways. Member Standing Committee on Finance, Member Standing Committee on Law, Justice & Human Rights, Member House Business Advisory Committee and Member Public Accounts Committee. He is also been assigned a number of Sub-Committees of Public Accounts Committee.
Hon. Syed Naveed Qamar is also a Member of Parliamentary Committee on the Appointment of judges to Honorable Superior Courts.
Besides, Syed Naveed Qamar is a senior leader of Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) and currently, holds the position of Member Central Executive Committee in the Party.
SOCIAL SECTOR DEVELOPMENT AND INTERNATIONAL COMMITMENTS
Hon. Syed Naveed Qamar takes keen interest in Social Sector Development and is very committed to work for it even at international forums. He is member of a number of Parliamentary Friendship Groups and convener of Pakistan-Hungary Parliamentary Friendship Group.
He is Member on Board of Governors of Pakistan’s premier policy think-tank Sustainable Development Policy Institute. Also, He is contributing at Pakistan Institute of Parliamentary Services on its Board of Directors.
He also coined the idea of Parliamentarians for new South Asia under civil society organization’s campaign Imagine New South Asia. He is also on the Executive Board of Parliamentarians for Global Action (PGA) and is remained a founder Convener for Peace and Democracy at its international network. He is also, a Member of the core team of Afghanistan Connected Abu Dhabi Process Plan. Syed Naveed Qamar is author of a number of Papers prepared for National & International Seminars.
